PHAN was established in November 1950 (initially as the Nebraska Public Health Association and renamed in 2000). 

PHAN is led by a dedicated Board of Directors and Executive Director who work collaboratively with members to foster opportunities for connection, learning, and professional growth. Together, they strengthen the governance and operational systems that enable PHAN to effectively serve its members and amplify the voice of public health across Nebraska.

PHAN provides a forum for discussion and advocacy around significant public health concerns facing our state. As the state's affiliate of the American Public Health Association, PHAN members also add Nebraska's perspectiveto national public health discussions. PHAN has collaborated with APHA to grow stronger as organizations, to share expertise, influence, and resources, and to advocate for common priorities at the local, state and federal levels. APHA champions optimal, equitable health and well-being for all. With a broad-based member community and 150-year perspective, APHA influences federal policy to improve the public’s health.
